Chapter 3 – Not Seeing You
The car stopped in front of their door, and Genie immediately got out of the house. Cecille got out of the car, and smiled at her. “Are you ready, Xuan Xuan?” she asked. She smiled and nodded her head. Then, from the driver seat, Danson got out. And seeing his face just ruined her day. She just remembered what Calvin told him before – and that is to act as if he doesn't exist. And she is going to do that right now. “Let's go.” she told Cecille. Cecille nodded her head. She got on the passenger seat, and as Danson was about to open the back seat for Genie, she pushed him aside, opened it by herself. Danson could only sigh at what she did. “Fine...” he muttered.
It was rather traffic. And all this time, Danson have been eying Genie from his rearview mirror. She was just at the back, listening to her iPod and tinkering with her phone. “So, Genie... where do you want to have lunch later?” he asked to break the silence. “I am not hearing you...” she thought. Danson sighed, and shook his head. “Auntie... can you ask Genie where she wants to eat for lunch? Seems like she can't hear me.” he told Cecille. Cecille looked back at Genie and smiled. “Genie, dear, where do you want to eat later?” she asked. Genie looked at her future stepmom and smiled. “Anywhere would be great. As long as it's Chinese food.” she said. Cecille just nodded her head, then turned to Danson. “Eh, Danson... can you recommend a god restaurant where we can it?” she asked her nephew. “I know this new restaurant in Ximending. If you want, we can try it out...” he said. Then, he looked at Genie again through the mirror. “Is it OK with you, Genie?” he asked. Still, Genie ignore him as she continued to tinker with her phone.
He let out a sigh of frustration when he did not hear an answer from her. “Auntie, can you ask her again if she would like to go to that restaurant that I'm talking about? It seems like she can't hear me.” he asked in an annoyed tone. Cecille turned again to Genie. “Genie, dear, Danson said about this new restaurant in Ximending. Want to try it out?” she asked. Genie smiled at her. “Sure. Anywhere would be fine.” she said. She looked at the pissed off Danson on the mirror, and let out a smirk. “What's wrong with this girl?” he thought. Genie can see how pissed off he is, and it made her feel so victorious. “Ha! In your face, Danson!” she thought. At least she manged to make him so annoyed.
He gripped on the steering wheel to divert his anger on Genie. “Fine... annoy me all you want, Genie. I'll get back at you... just wait and see...” he thought.
--
Still, Genie acted as if Danson never existed.
After they lunch, they went to the dress shop, where Cecille will have their gowns made. “Hey, Cecille!” Simon, the shop owner, greeted them as soon as they arrived. “Hi, Simon. We're here for the gowns.” she said. Simon nodded his head. “Of course, of course. I have the new designs here. I'm sure you're going to like it.” he said. Then, he looked at Danson and Genie, and wondered who Genie is. “Danson, don't tell me this is your new girlfriend?” he asked. Genie gave him a surprised look, and shook her head. “No way!” she exclaimed. Danson let out a laugh as he saw Genie's reaction. Genie could only glare at him.
“This is Genie, Joey's daughter. My maid-of-honor.” Cecille said. Simon said. “I see... so you're Joey's daughter. How pretty. You look good together with Danson.” Simon said, smiling at her. Danson looked away from her, let out another laugh. Genie knew what he was doing, so she shot him another glare. “Actually, I do have a boyfriend.” she said proudly. With that, Danson gave her a surprised look. “You do?” he asked. Genie nodded her head. “Well, I never thought that someone is stupid enough to fall for someone like you.” he commented in a sarcastic tone.
With that, Genie glared at him angrily. Danson could swear she could see the steam coming out of the top of her head, and this made him more amused by her. “Can you repeat that?” she hissed at him. “What? The part when I said that I never thought someone is stupid enough to fall for you?” he asked. Genie took a deep breath to calm herself down. “Why you...” she hissed again. Cecille knew that the two are going to fight again, so she stepped in between the two. “Stop right there, you two.” she said firmly. Then, she turned to her nephew and looked sternly at him. “Yu Zhe, stop annoying Xuan Xuan, all right?” she told him. “I couldn't help it, sorry.” he said, letting out a playful smile. “Behave yourself.” Cecille said firmly. Then, she turned to Genie, and smiled at her. “Just don't mind him.” she said to Genie. Danson let out a sigh, and shook his head. “As if she's not doing that the whole day...” he muttered under his breath. Genie heard what she said. She looked at him, and gave him a smirk. “You're not even worth my attention.” she told him. Then, she snobbed him, and followed Simon and Cecille inside. Danson just watched as the annoyed Genie leaves him. “Danson Tang, one point!” he thought happily.
--
Danson was busy reading some magazines while waiting for his aunt and for Genie to finish fitting their gowns. Just then, Genie came out, and sat at the other end of the couch. Danson glanced at her for a while, and then continued to read his magazine. Genie looked at him for a while, and batted her eye lashes at him. “Are you trying to charm me?” Danson asked. Genie rolled her eyes at him. “Please... why would I want to charm you?” she asked. “Because you still like me.” he said. He closed his magazine, and then he looked at her. “I think you haven't gotten over me.” he said. Genie rolled her eyes at him again. “Oh, really? Excuse me, but I am not the kind of girl that would hold on to someone who doesn't like me.” she said. “Oh really? If I know, when I broke up with you, you were crying your eyes out.”
“Well, I did. But when I realized how jerk you are, I didn't waste anymore tears on you.”
“Ha, if I know, it was hard for you to move on.”
“For your information, it was easy for me to move on.”
“Oh, really?”
“Really.”
Danson leaned on the couch, still having that smirk on his face. “I bet you're just making up that boyfriend of yours.” he said. Before Genie could react, he heard his phone ring. He took it from his phone, and answered the call. “Hello?” he said. Genie watched him as he talked on the phone. She saw him as lips curved into a smile. “Oh hey, baby... tomorrow night? Hmmm.... OK, don't worry, I'll be there. Love you too. Bye.” he said. He ended the call, and as he put his phone back to his pocket, he looked at Genie, and smirked at her. “One of your girlfriends?” she asked. He nodded his head. “At least I have an existing and real one.” he said. Genie just shook her head as she sighed. “So, about your imaginary boyfriend?” Danson asked.
Just then, Genie's phone rang. She took it from her pocket, and upon seeing Calvin's name flahsing on the screen, she smiled gidddily. She answered the call excitedly, which made Danson confused with her. “ Hello? Honey?” she said. Now, it's Danson's turn to watch her as she talks on the phone. She let out a smile as she bit her lower lip. “I'm doing great here, honey, how about you... that's great to hear! I'm so proud of you. Of course, I'm helping out Aunt Cecille with the wedding preparations. I really hope you could come here soon, so that you'll get to meet her and dad. I know, I know.... don't worry, I understand how important your work is. All right... I'll talk to you soon. Love you too, honey.”
She is still smiling as she ended the call. She looked at Danson, and saw the annoyed look on his face. She could only let out a smirk at him. “So, who had the imaginary boyfriend now?” she asked. Danson sighed, and shook his head.
--
At Danson's bar that night.
“Don't tell me that you're getting jealous.” Joe asked Danson. Danson finished his drink, and placed the glass on the counter. Danson took a deep breath as he looked at his best bud. “Do I look like one?” he asked in an annoyed tone. Joe let out a laugh as he shook his head. “No. You're just annoyed when you find out that Genie really have a boyfriend.” Joe said. Danson leaned on the counter, and then instructed the bartender to fill up his glass again. “People move on, Danson. Just because you are Genie's first love, doesn't mean that she have no right to love others. She have moved on, all right. Obviously you do too, right?” Joe asked.
He waited for Danson to answer, but he remained silent. “You have moved on, right Danson?” Joe asked again. Still, there was no answer from him. Suddenly, he had a hunch as to why Danson is acting that way. “Danson... you still love Genie?” Joe asked. Danson let out a groan, and slowly nodded his head. Joe was shocked at his answer. “You... you do?” he asked again. “I am still in love with Genie, all right?” he said in an annoyed tone. Joe became confused of his best friend. “But... but... you dumped her...”
“I regret that decision.”
“You had a lot of girlfriends after her...”
“It's because I thought I could easily forget her by dating other girls.”
“But why? How? How can you be still in love with her? And why did you break up with her in the first place?”
Danson sipped his drink before answering his question. “Because our relationship is starting to be serious, and it's scaring the hell out of me.” he said. Then, he looked at his best friend. “And you know me. I hate it when things gets too serious. I love her so much, Joe. But... I'm not ready to change my old ways for her. There are a lot of things I want to do before I settle down with just one girl, and besides, we're still both young. I'm scared that it will hurt her more if I can't commit myself to her completely. You know how scared I am with the word commitment, all right?” he said. Joe nodded his head, but nevertheless, he is still confused. “So, you broke up with her, it's because you can't commit yourself to her, and that you don't want to hurt her?” Joe asked. Danson nodded his head. “I thought she deserve someone better... someone who could love her and commit himself to her completely. That's why I chose to let her go... and now that she have someone else...”
Danson lowered his head, and let out a sigh. “Now that she have someone else, you are regretting everything. You wish that you were the guy that she is loving right now, right?” Joe asked. Danson nodded his head. “Do you really want her so much?” Joe asked. “I need her in my life. But what can I do? Obviously, she is still mad at me for breaking her heart 12 years ago...” he said sadly. “Then, if you love her, don't give up without a fight. I know a lot of girls are fighting their way to be with the great Danson Tang. How about if you turn the tables, and let the great Danson Tang chase the only girl he loves?” Joe said. With that, Danson gave him a confused look. “What do you mean?” he asked. “Woo her again. Court her. Do everything so that she would fall in love with you again. It might take a lot of hard work, but if you really want Genie, if you think she is worth all the risk of looking like a fool, then you can win her heart. You can have her heart again, Danson... but it would take more than words to have her once again. You need to show some effort. And besides, Genie is not yet getting married with her boyfriend, right?” Joe said.
Danson let out a smile. For the first time, Joe made sense, and for the first time, he listened to his advise. “You're right...” he said. “I'll do everything to make her love me again.”
