Round 10 – You Belong With Me



“You two really look good together!” Angela said to Ella and Sphinx. Charlene, her friend nodded in agreement. “Yeah! Don’t tell me that after all these years your status still remains as best friends?” Charlene asked. Ella and Sphinx looked at each other and smiled. “Well… yeah, we’re still best friends…” Sphinx said. “Why don’t the two of you hook up? I mean, you two have been inseparable since middle school!” Angela said. Ella looked up at Sphinx as she hugged his arms. “You know, there are people who are meant to be just friends. I think Ella and I are one of those people…. But let’s see.” Sphinx said. Ella nodded in agreement. “Besides, there’s no rush. Sphinx just broke up with his recent girlfriend, and I know he needs time to move on.” She said. Angela and Charlene nodded their head. “Besides, my 25th birthday is coming soon. I know Sphinx will keep his promise of marrying me…” she thought happily. “But then again, let’s see. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll find out that the two of us are getting married already.” Sphinx said. All of them let out a laugh, and Ella just kept on smiling to herself. “Oh, yes… this year you will definitely hear that news.” She thought.

Angela turned her attention to Danson and Chun, who were standing by the bar. “Hey, Ella… have you seen the cutest guy in our batch?” she said. Ella looked around. “Who was that again?” she asked. “You know, Wu Chun.” Angela said. Charlene nodded in agreement. “He sure did become much hotter…” Charlene said. Angela nodded in agreement with her. Ella just rolled her eyes. “Oh, please… he’s not cute. He’s not even handsome. He still looked like a chicken face.” She said. Angela and Charlene laughed at her. “Until now, you’re still mad at Chun? Can’t you let it go?” Charlene asked. “I could never forgive that chicken face for bullying me.” She said. Charlene just shook her head. “But he is hot. I wonder if he already have a girlfriend…” Charlene said. “I bet he have a dozen.” Angela said. “I bet he’s gay.” Ella said. Charlene, Angela and Sphinx just laughed at what she said. Then, Sphinx wrapped his arm around her, and pulled her close to him. “Don’t be too hot-headed about that guy, Ellie. Why don’t we go get a drink to cool you down.” Sphinx said to her. Ella nodded her head, and followed Sphinx at the other side of the bar.

“Someone we won’t expect you to like? So, you mean it’s not our princesses Angela, Charlene, Selina, Esther and Crystal?” Danson asked Chun again. Chun nodded his head. “It’s not one of them.” He said coolly. Danson scratched his chin as he tried to figure out who his crush is. “Nana is a cute girl too… the one who always becomes you partner during square dance…” Danson said. Chun shook his head again. “Although Nana is cute, she’s not the girl I like.” He said. “Are you sure she’s from our batch? Maybe she’s from a lower or higher batch…” Danson said. Chun laughed, and shook his head. “I’m not giving you anymore clues, Danson.” He said. “I think I’ll ask around who received cookies from you…” Danson said. “I always give cookies to our classmates, remember? Except for that Ms. Piggy.” He said. With that, Danson let out another laugh. “You hate her so much, even before, huh?” he said. “She started it.” Chun said.

Selina, Sphinx, Ella, Chun and Danson settled at the table right in front of the stage. They were watching as their classmates, Wen Xiang and Zheng Hao were hosting and doing some comedic acts on stage. A while ago, their classmate, A Chord and Danson sang a song on the karaoke on stage. “Thank you for that wonderful song, Danson.” Wen Xiang said as Danson went down the stage. “I know all the girls went crazy for your rendition of “True”. You should have been a singer instead!” Zheng Hao said. As Danson sat on his seat, he smiled at the two, and mouthed his thanks. “OK, so now, we heard two of our very talented classmates. Who wants to go next?” Wen Xiang asked. “We want the next one to be a girl.” Zheng Hao said. Then, the two eyed on Ella, and let out a wicked smile. “We want Ella Chen to be exact!” Wen Xiang said. Everyone cheered and shouted Ella’s name. Chun looked at her, and just rolled his eyes in disgust. “Oh, please… can she sing?” he asked. “She was part of the glee club back in elementary.” Danson told him. Ella looked at Chun, and smirked at him. “Well, someone seems tom be jealous because someone could not sing.” She said. Chun smirked back at her. “I bet when you sing, you sound like a croaking frog in the rain.” Chun said.

Ella glared at him as she folded her arms. “Oh, really?” she said. “I bet it is.” Chun said. She stood up from her seat, and continued to glare at him. “Well then, wait and see chicken face.” She said. She then went up to the stage. After selecting her song, she took the mic from Wen Xiang. “Let’s give Ella a round of applause!” Zheng Hao said as he gave way to Ella. Everyone clapped their hands, and then her song started.

Everyone clapped their hands as Ella finished the song. Chun just folded his arms as he watched her. He observed that while she was singing, she never took her eyes off Sphinx. “Stupid girl. Don’t you know that you’re giving him a clue of how you feel for him? You chose that sappy song, and you were just eying at him the whole time!” he thought disgustingly to himself. He could hear his classmates asking Ella to sing again. “More! More! More!” they shouted. “Please, my ears will bleed if she sings again.” He muttered. Danson looked at him, and smiled. “But she do have a voice, right?” Danson said. Chun just sighed. “Yeah, she sings well.” He said. Chun let out another irritated sigh, and looked away from Danson. “She’s making herself so obvious that she likes Sphinx so much. Yuck.” He thought.

Ella came down the stage, and as she went up to her seat, she smirked at Chun. “How’s that, chicken face?” she said. Chun smirked at her. “Oh, did you sing? I thought you were reciting a poem.” He said. Ella could feel her blood rushing up to her brain. “Why you stupid chicken face…” she said, trying to control her anger. “Whoa, whoa, calm down, Ellie. Don’t start a fight here.” Sphinx said. He held Ella’s hand, and helped her to her seat. Chun laughed as he was watching her reaction. He won again, that’s for sure. He made Ella annoyed at him again. Ella folded her arms, and looked away from him. “Stuipid chicken face.” She muttered. Chun could only smile to himself because of how angry Ella is at him.

“Good night, Ms. Piggy!” Chun said to Ella as she got out of the hotel and head to his car. Ella just folded his arms, as she watched him leave. “Seems like you and Chun are still in bad terms, huh?” Danson said as he walked up to her. “He never stopped bugging me.” Ella said. Danson just laughed, and shook his head. “I heard you and Chun are neighbors, huh?” Danson asked. “You don’t know how difficult it is in my part. Everyday, I’m struggling to see his ugly face.” Ella said. Danson let out another laugh. “Seems like you can’t forgive him for everything, especially for kissing you that graduation, right?” Danson asked again. Ella nodded her head. “I’ll do everything to get back at him…” she muttered.

Then an idea hit his head. “How about this…” Danson said. Ella looked at him, and waited for him to speak. “I’m going to tell you a secret. Something that he shared to me a long time ago…” he said. “You’re going to tell me Chun’s secret? Are you sure you want to betray him?” she asked. “It just so happens that he didn’t keep his promise to me. And knowing you, the curious one, you will do anything to find out all about it.” Danson said. Ella’s face turn into a curious expression. “What is it?” she asked. Danson smiled at him, and folded his arms. “His secret is that… back in elementary… he have a crush on someone.” He said. Ella was surprised at what he said. Sure, Chun is being paired up to some princesses of their batch, but he never showed interest on them. “He does?” she asked. Danson nodded his head. “Who is it?” she asked. Danson just shrugged his shoulder. “I don’t know… he won’t tell me. Before we graduated, he told me he will tell me who that girl is when we see each other again, but still, he wouldn’t tell me who she is.” He said. “And why are you tell me this, Danson?” she asked. Danson let out a snicker. “Isn’t it obvious? I want you to find out who his crush is. Then, you can use that information to tease him to death, or even blackmail him.” Danson said.

It was as if a light bulb popped out of Ella’s head. She scratched her chin, and she looked evilly at Danson. “Crush, eh?” she said. Danson nodded his head. “So, will you take that challenge?” Danson asked. Ella nodded her head. “You bet I will Danson…” she said. “And I will use that information to get back at that chicken face!”

Sphinx walked Ella up to her door. Then, he held her hand as Ella turned to him. “Thanks for a lovely night, Sphinx… although that chicken face almost ruined it.” She said. Sphinx smiled at him. “Anything for you, princess. You know I would do everything to make you happy.” He said. Ella smiled shyly at him as she brushed. “Aiyo… you always make me blush whenever you say that…” Ella said. Sphinx just let out a chuckle, and then he pulled her close to him for an embrace.

Ella was surprised at what he did, nevertheless, happy. It’s been a long time since Sphinx held her like this. “Ella, you know how important you are to me. You know how much you mean to me. If I hadn’t met you, then maybe my life wouldn’t be this complete. As long as you are here with me, I’m contented…” he said. Ella smiled to herself as she hugged Sphinx back. “Sphinx, you know that I do feel the same way for you. You mean a lot to me as well…” she said. Sphinx let her go, and smiled at her. “I promise you, no matter what, I’ll always make you happy. Because seeing you happy and always smiling makes me feel satisfied.” He said. Ella looked up and him, and then she smiled at him sadly. “Then, if you want me to be happy, tell me that you love me too, Sphinx… tell me that you feel the same way as I do… then I will be happy and more contented for the rest of my life. Just tell me that your heart is mine, and will always be mine for the rest of our lives…” she thought. She wanted to say those words to him, but when she tried to open her mouth to speak, the words seems to get stuck in her throat.

“Ella…” Sphinx called. Ella looked up at him dreamily, and smiled. “Sphinx…” she called. “I really hope one day, you will find the guy who will take care of you the way I do… and who will love you with all that he have.” He said. “I already found him… all you have to do is tell me that you feel the same way…” she thought. “I know you’ll find him really soon…” he said. Ella looked away from him to hid her blushing. “Oh my God… does this mean Sphinx is going to tell me that he likes me? Aiyo… no need to be shy, Sphinx. The feeling is just mutual!” she thought. Then, she looked at him again, and nodded her head. “I can feel that I will find him before I turn 25.” She said. “But if not… you will still keep your promise to me, right?” she asked. Sphinx paused, and just let out a smile.

Instead of going home that night, Chun went straight to Bianca’s hotel. Once he is by the door of her room, he knocked. After a while, Bianca opened the door, and came out. “Chun! I thought you’re at your reunion?” she asked. Chun gave her a smile. “Care to go with me for a walk?” he asked. Bianca nodded her head, and went out of her room.

They found themselves strolling at a nearby park. “How was the reunion, Chunnie?” Bianca asked. Chun put his hands inside his pocket, and sighed. “It’s OK… except for that Ms. Piggy…” he said. Bianca laughed at him. “Up until now, you’re still mad at that classmate of yours…” she said. “Of course! Everyday with her is like living inside a nightmare. You have no idea how much she bullied me when we were kids.” He said. “But you always get back at her. And you also bully her.” She said. Bianca looked away from him, and looked up at the sky as she walked. “You know what, if you didn’t tell me that you hate her, I might have thought that the reason why you are annoying her when you were still kids is because you have a crush on her.” She said. Chun paused, and gave her a bewildered expression. “Of course, not! Me? Like Ms. Piggy? No way!” he said. Bianca just laughed at his reaction. “You just like picking on her, right?” she asked. Chun nodded his head. “She can’t be my crush, because I like someone else…” he said. Then, he stopped walking, and looked at Bianca.

“It’s now or never…” he thought. At that moment, he decided to tell Bianca how he really feels. He have to tell her that he loves her. This is the right moment for him to tell her how he felt for her the past few years. “You like someone else? Why didn’t you tell me all about her! And to think I am like your big sister. Tell me, who is the lucky girl who finally captured the heart of my Chunnie?” she asked. He looked at her, and gazed into her lovely face for a long time. As he opened his mouth to speak her name, he suddenly became speechless. “It’s you…. Bianca, I’m in love with you…” he wanted to say. Bianca gave her a confused look. “Chunnie, is there something wrong?” she asked. “T-t-the g-g-girl I like… s-she is…”

Before Chun could speak, he saw Bianca looked up at the night sky. Then, she let out that lovely smile that he have always loved. “Look! Shooting stars!” Bianca said, pointing up at the sky. Chun looked up and saw a shooting star falling from the sky. Then, he felt Bianca held on to his arms. “Chunnie, let’s make a wish together, all right?” she said. Chun nodded his head. He watched her as she closed her eyes, and clasp her hands to make her wish. Then, he closed his eyes as he makes his own wish.
“Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight
Wish I may, wish I might…
Have my wish come true tonight…
I wish… I wish for Bianca to see me… to know that I love her, and for her to love me as well…”

Sphinx entered the cafe, and his eyes searched around the place. At one corner, he saw her sitting at one corner, smiling as she watched the people pass by her. Suddenly he felt his heart beating faster and faster as he walked towards her direction. He was mesmerized by her beauty yet again, and he couldn’t help but fall in love again for the second time. He saw her look up at him, and then she gave him another lovely smile, more lovelier than the one he saw a while ago.

“Bianca…” he called. Bianca smiled at him. “Hello, Sphinx.” She greeted. He took the seat in front of her, and smiled at him. “Sorry, did I keep you waiting?” he asked. She shook her head. “I just arrived a few minutes ago.” She said. Sphinx smiled, and nodded his head. “Oh…” he said. Bianca looked at him closely, and watched him as his cheeks turn pink as he blushed. There was something with the way he smiled that made her heart beat fast as well. She was glad that Sphinx called her the other day, and asked her out. Since she met him, she couldn’t take her mind off him. “I’m glad that you agreed to go out with me today…” he said. “I’m glad that you asked me out…” Bianca said. Then, Sphinx leaned over, and held Bianca’s hand.
