Chapter 22 – We Could Be In Love
Be still my heart,
Lately its mind is on its own
It could go far and wide
Just to be near you...
--
“Good morning, Mr. Wu.”
His employees greeted him as he entered the office. “Good morning.” he said, nodding his head and giving them a faint smile. Then, he paused upon seeing Ella's empty desk. He frowned upon seeing that Ella is not yet around. “What happened to her? Is she sick? Is she going to be absent?” he thought. A lot of things were going through his mind as he thought where his assistant could be. “Good morning, boss.” he heard a familiar voice said. He smiled to himself as he realized who it was. “Ella...” he mumbled. He turn to look at her, and gave her a warm smile. “Good morning, Ella.” he said. Meanwhile, Wallace, who was just behind Ella was surprised at his reaction. “Seems like someone got out at the right side of the bed.” he commented. Chun just laughed at what Wallace said. “Stop teasing me, Wallace. Get inside my office, and let's discuss about that new project.” he said. Wallace smiled, and nodded his head. As they were about to enter his office, Wallace's phone rang. The two paused, and Chun watched Wallace as he answered the call.
“Hello? Yes, mom? Yeah... What?! Really?! OK, OK... I'm on my way now. Bye.” he heard Wallace said. Chun gave Wallace a confused look, and the latter only gave Chun a surprised look. “Chun, Hebe's water bag broke. Wallace junior's coming out.” he said. Chun gave him a smile. “Congratulations! Now what are you doing, standing there? Aren't you supposed to rush at the hospital or something?” he asked. “Is it OK if I take the day off?” Wallace asked. “Take a leave for the next two weeks or so. Wallace junior and Hebe needs you. Go.” he ordered him. Wallace smiled at him, and nodded his head. “Thanks, man! Don't forget, you're Wallace junior's godfather, OK?” he said. Chun smiled at him, and nodded his head. Then, he watched as his friend excitedly leave the office. As soon as Wallace is out of sight, Chun turned to Ella. “So, since Wallace will be gone... can you take his place for a while?” he asked. Ella could only smile at her boss. “Of course. It's my job, right?” she teased. Chun laughed at her, and nodded his head. “Come inside. We need to discuss about the new project.” he said to her. Ella nodded her head, and followed Chun inside his office.
--
Chun kept on staring at the document in his hand. He was trying to understand its contents, but it's not sinking in to him. He glance up, and saw Ella seriously reading on the document on his hand. “What's wrong with me? I can't concentrate with Ella around me...” he thought. He turned his eyes on the documents, and tried to focus on it. Still, he couldn't understand a word written on it. “This is bad... I'm not like this. I'm not easily distracted... but...” he thought. Ella looked up at Chun, and saw his confused expression. “Mr. Wu?” she called. Chun looked up at her. “Chun. Call me Chun.” he said. “But we're in the office...”
“We're alone in my office. Call me Chun.”
Ella sighed, then she smiled at him. “Chun, are you OK?” she asked. Chun sighed, and shook his head. “I don't seem to understand a thing about this document.” he said. “I think you're stressed out. You don't have to force yourself if you can't do it. You need t relax. Don't pressure yourself.” Ella said. “But this is an important project Ella...”
“Seems to me that all projects are important to you, but don't force yourself if you can't do it anymore. The more you pressure yourself, the more that you won't be able to finish a thing. So, loosen up a little and relax, OK?”
Chun looked up at her, and smiled. He put the document down, and then leaned to his table and faced Ella. “So, what do you suggest that we do?” he asked. “Do you trust me?” she asked. Chun gave her a wondering look. “Why? Are you going to kidnap me or something?” he asked. Ella just laughed at him. “Of course not, silly! Just answer my question first. Do you trust me?” she asked again. Although he was hesitating, Chun nodded his head. “Good. Now, are you willing to go with me wherever I go?” she asked again. This time, he gave her a suspicious look. “Are you up to something no good?” he asked. “i thought you trust me?” she said.
Chun sighed and leaned back on his chair. Meanwhile, Ella stood up from her seat, then walked towards him. She took his hand, and then pulled him out of his chair. “Hey! Where are you taking me?” Chun asked in a surprised tone. Ella paused, and smiled at him. “Trust me.” she said, winking at him.
--
Chun could not believe where Ella took him. It was the rooftop of the building ( a few floors below his pent house). “What are we doing here?” he asked Ella. Ella just smiled at him, then he saw her walked towards the balcony. “Enjoying the cool breeze up here.” Ella answered as she turned to him. Ella leaned at the balcony, enjoying the view below them. “Do you always come here?” he asked as he stood beside her. Ella smiled and nodded his head. “Arron and I usually come here when we feel burnt out. He loves being here, you know.” she said. Chun turned away from her, feeling jealous upon hearing his brother's name. “Oh...” he muttered. “It's really relaxing up here. You can forget all your worries while you're here. Don't you agree, Chun?” she asked. Chun looked at her, and nodded his head. “Yeah...” he said in a low voice.
Ella smiled at him. Then he turned away from him, and began to shout. “Aaaahhhhh” she shouted. This made Chun startled. “Wei! What's wrong?” he asked her. Ella looked at her, and smiled. “It's my way of releasing my stress. Why don't you try it?” she said. Chun gave her an are-you-kidding-me look. “What?” he said. “Just try it, Chun. I know it would work on you. After you shout, you'll feel more at ease.” she said. Chun sighed again, and then he made a step forward, and began to shout. “Aaaaaahhhh!” he shouted. Ella watched him as he shout, and then she smiled. Chun smiled to himself. Ella's right, it did made him feel unburdened after all. “This is... great!” he said as he turned to her. Ella just laughed, and nodded her head. The she shouted again, and Chun shouted with her. He paused, and then glanced at her. It's not the shouting that made him feel good. It's not even the cool breeze touching his skin.
It was Ella, the girl standing beside her, that made him feel this better.
He blushed at that thought. He doesn't how she does it, but Ella does it best. It's like Ella could see through him. “Anything wrong, Chun?” he heard Ella said. Hearing his name coming out of her mouth suddenly felt like music in his ears. He looked at her, and shook his head. “Nothing's wrong. It's just that... I... I never felt this way before...” he said. Ella smiled at him. “I'm glad that you feel better now, Chun.” she said. She turned away from him, and enjoyed the view from where they were. Chun could only gaze at her for a long time. “Yeah...” he said dreamily. “I'm glad...”
--
It was 6 PM.
Chun peeked outside of his office, and found Ella alone. He immediately got out of his office and approached Ella. “Ella...” he called. Ella looked up at him, and smiled. “Anything you want, boss?” she asked. “Are... are you going home?” he asked. Ella nodded her head. “Are your friends waiting for you? Or do you have any plans tonight?” he asked. “Nah, no plans tonight. Calvin's going out on a date, and I think Jiro will be doing overtime again. Angela and I will be home alone tonight.” she said. He turned away from her, and then smiled to himself. “Good...” he muttered. Ella gave her boss a confused look. “What's good with that?” she asked. Chun looked at her, startled. He became speechless as he looked at her. Actually, our leading man looks like a giddy school boy.
“Well... I... uh.. you know... uh...” he stuttered. Ella simply gave him a blank look. She doesn't know what he was trying to say. “What is it?” she asked. “Err... you know... grandpa...” he said. Ella's expression turned from blank to confused. “Grandpa? What about grandpa?” she asked. Chun felt beads of sweats falling down his forehead. He took out his handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped it away. “Nothing... uh... nothing... really...” he said. He turned to leave her alone. His stuttering have embarrassed him in front of our heroine.
“Wei, Chun?” Ella called again. Chun paused, and looked back at her. “Does grandpa want to see me?” she asked. Chun immediately nodded his head. “Yeah, yeah! That's what I'm trying to say.” he said. Ella laughed at him. She stood up from her seat, and then got her bag. “Boss, you should have told me a while ago that grandpa wants to see me. Maybe I could go home with you so that I can see grandpa.” she said. Chun's face lightened up at what she said. “Really?” he said excitedly. Ella smiled, and nodded her head. “It's been weeks since I last saw grandpa. It wouldn't hurt if I see him tonight, right?” she said. Chun smiled idiotically and nodded his head. “Yeah, yeah. That's right. You should really see grandpa because you promised him that you'll come and visit him frequently. You should keep your promise, Ella.” he said. Ella laughed at him again. “I don't forget my promise, Chun. That I assure you.” she said. Ella held onto Chun's arm, which made him blush even more. “So, shall we go?” she said. Chun looked at her, and smiled.
--
Calvin took a deep breath as he held the bouquet of flowers in his hand. He made a step to the door, and knocked. After a few seconds, Joe opened it. “Oh, hi Calvin!” she said cheerily. Calvin was stunned as he looked at her. “Hi...” he said. Then, he handed her the flowers. “Thank you, Calvin...” Joe said, blushing. “So, shall we go?” he asked. Joe smiled, and nodded her head.
They had dinner at a French restaurant. Both of them were awfully quiet during dinner. Calvin would secretly glance at Joe once in a while, and whenever Joe catches him glancing at her, he would blush. “Is there something that you want to tell me, Calvin?” she asked. Calvin smiled shyly, and nodded his head. “Yeah... I want to ask you something, actually...” he said. He leaned towards her, and then he held her hand. “Joe... we've been going out for quite some time now. I really enjoy your company, and I hope you feel the same way as well...” he said. Joe smiled at him, and nodded her head. “I do enjoy your company, Calvin.” she said. Calvin smiled at her. “Thank you, Joe. I'm glad that you agreed to go out on a date with me. Actually, before I met you, I didn't date any other girls. I said to myself that if I found the girl that I would fall in love with, I'll do my best to be by her side forever. And... and I think I found her already.” he said.
Joe was surprised at what he said. Then, Calvin held both of her hands, and looked straight into her eyes. “Joe, the moment I saw you, I know I'm in love with you. I knew right then that I want to be with you forever. I... I want to take this chance to ask you this. Joe Chen Qiao En, will you be my girlfriend?” he asked. Joe stared at him for a long time, and then she smiled. Then, she nodded her head. “Yes, I'm willing to be your girlfriend. And I thought you'll never ask.” she said. Calvin's face lightened up upon hearing what she said. Finally, Joe is now her official girlfriend. “I... I'm not dreaming, am I? You really agreed to be my girlfriend?” he asked. Joe laughed, and then she nodded her head.
With that, Calvin jumped up from his chair. Literally. “Yoohoo!” he shouted. His loud voice startled everyone inside the restaurant, but he doesn't care. “Joe's my girlfriend now! She's my girlfriend now!” he shouted. Everyone laughed at him, and then they clapped their hands. “Congratulations.”
“You two look perfect together.”
“Nice couple.”
“Lucky kid!”
Calvin looked at the people around them, and then thanked them. Then, he walked towards Joe, and knelt before her. He took her hand, and then he smiled at her. “Joe, you won't regret a thing with me. I promise that I will be a good boyfriend. I will give you everything you want, and I will do anything for you. I promise you that.” he said. Joe smiled at him, and nodded her head. “i trust that, Calvin. I love you.” she said. “I love you too.” he said. Then, he reached for her, and gave her a long kiss on the lips.
--
Grandpa was surprised to see Chun and Ella enter the mansion. “Oh, Ella! It's you! What brings you here?” he asked. Ella looked at grandpa with confused look, then he turned to Chun. Then, she looked at grandpa again. “I... I thought you want to see me?” she asked. Chun began to panic. He should have called his grandpa earlier to tell him that Ella will be coming over. “Eh, grandpa...” Chun said as he walked towards her. “Didn't you said this morning that you wish to see Ella again because you miss her?” Chun said. Grandpa gave Chun a confused look. “I said that?” he asked his grandson. Chun immediately nodded his head. Then, grandpa turned to Ella and smiled. “Of course, I did miss Ella. It's been weeks since you last visited me.” he said. “That's why I'm here, grandpa. I missed you a lot too.” she said. Grandpa smiled at her and nodded his head. “Ella, please stay for dinner. I'll ask them to cook your favorite, OK?” he said. Ella nodded her head.
The two watched as grandpa headed inside. Chun could only sigh with relief as his grandpa left. “That was close...” he thought. Ella folded her arms, and gave Chun an evil smirk. “You lied, didn't you...” she said. Chun looked at Ella, and saw her smirking at him. “What do you mean?” he asked. “Grandpa didn't asked me to come tonight, didn't he?”
“He did!”
“He never mentioned that.”
“He did!”
“He didn't even remember telling you that he misses me.”
Ella walked around Chun, as if interrogating him. “Grandpa usually calls me when he wants to see me. So, when you told me that grandpa wants to see me, I had my doubts. But I came anyways...” she said. Chun gave her a confused look. “So, you knew all this time that I'm bluffing?” he asked. Ella nodded her head. “I can see it in your face.” she said. Chun could only sigh. It wasn't a good idea to bring Ella home. And what the hell was he thinking when he asked Ella to go home with him?
“Anyways, I really wanted to see grandpa, so I should thank you for bringing me here.” she said. Chun looked at her, and smiled. “You're welcome.” he said. Ella laughed at him. She stared at his smiling face for a long time, then she reached for him, and pinched his cheeks.”You know, you're more cute when you smile. Don't be too serious, Chun. You should always smile.” she said. Chun felt himself blushing again. His could feel his heart beating fast, as if having a race inside his chest. “What's going on with me?” he thought.
Ella looked away from him, as she felt herself blushing. Whenever Chun smiled her way, she have this giddy feeling she couldn't explain. Although she felt this way before with Arron, with Chun, it's different. The feeling seems much stronger with him. “Oh my God, what am I thinking?” she thought. “So...” she heard Chun said. He held her hand, and then she turned to him, their eyes meeting. “Would you like to see Arron's room again?” he asked. Ella felt an electricity flowing through her vein as he held his hand. “Uh... n-no...” she stuttered. “Want to play video games?” he asked again. Ella shook her head. “Garden?”
Ella shook her head.
“Pool?”
Ella shook her head.
“Want to play billiards?”
Ella shook her head.
“What do you want to do while we wait for dinner to be ready?”
Ella looked up at him, and smiled. “Can I see your room?” she said. Then, she realized that what she was not supposed to say what she just said now. She turned away from him, and whacked her head. “Stupid me! Why do I want to see his room?” she thought. Then, she heard Chun laugh. “Why would you want to see my room? Mine's not as colorful as Arron's.” he said. “I'm just curious.” she answered. “My room's off limits to girls, except for Ariel. Sorry.” he said. Ella looked at him, and smiled. As she nodded her head, she sighed with relief. Who knows what Chun would do to her if they got into his room. But then, the mere thought of him kissing her again made her heart skip a beat.
The truth is, our leading man lied. No, he doesn't have that kind if rule. It's just that he doesn't know if he can control himself once he and Ella are alone in his room. The last time, in Tokyo, they almost kissed. Almost, for they didn't know that they kissed while they're dreaming. And just like our heroine, our leading man have this big urge to kiss her soft lips again. And he doesn't know why he's obsessing with that. “I think we should take a walk at the garden for a while... just to kill time.” Chun suggested. Ella nodded in agreement.
--
Jiro stood before Angela's room, and then he knocked. After a while, Angela opened the door, and saw him standing by the door. “Hey, monkey boy!” she said. Jiro let out a smirk. “Hey amazon girl!” she said. Then, he gave her a bouquet of red roses. “For you. Happy anniversary.” he said. Angela was surprised with his gift. “Oh, Jiro... you shouldn't have!” she cooed. Jiro just smiled at her. “But I want to, Angela.” he said. Angela felt herself blushing. Then, she reached for him, and gave him a kiss on the lips. “i love you, Jiro.” she said. “I love you too, Angela.” he said. Then, they shared another long and loving kiss.
--
“Thanks for driving me home, boss.” Ella said as she unbuckled her seatbelt. “Anytime. You heard what grandpa said a while ago. You should visit him always, so better keep your promise.” Chun said. Ella nodded her head. “So, I'll see you tomorrow at the office?” she asked. Chun smiled and nodded his head. “Be there early, Ms. Chen. Wallace won't be at the office till next week.” he said. “Aye aye, captain.” she said. As she reached for the door to open it, she paused. Meanwhile, Chun continued to gaze at her. Then, she turned to Chun again. “By the way, boss -”
Ella wasn't able to continue what she was about to say, for as she turned to Chun again, their lips touched. The two broke away from each other, surprised at what just happened. Then, there was an awkward silence between the two of them for a while. Ella wanted to get out of his car, but her heart is telling her to stay. Chun couldn't look at Ella, as he felt guilty with kissing her accidentally. “Uhmm... I think I should make my move...” he heard her say. Before she could reach for the door again, Chun stopped her by holding her arm. “Ella, wait...” he said. Ella paused, then he looked at her. As she looked into his eyes, she like being lost in it. It was all of the energy she have have been sucked by him, making her more weaker and vulnerable. “Chun?” she said in a low voice.
Chun gazed into her eyes. His hand caressed her soft cheek, and then he moved closer to her. He was too close to her that he could already hear her heart beating. Ella stared into his face, anticipating him to get more closer to her. She felt the tip of his nose touched hers, and she could almost inhale his scent. She closed her eyes, and waited for that moment. Chun closed his eyes as he moved his face much closer to his. And then, that magical moment happened. Their lips brushed. He pressed his lips against her, and kissed her lovingly...
--
At that moment, they knew, they were sure...
They knew that they have already fallen for each other...
